How does the SUN READY
Electric Cylinder work?
|
The SUN READY is a copper electric hot water cylinder with a high pressure copper coil inside,
so that we can separate the Water Heating Side from the Water Use Side.
Because of this key design feature, you can choose to add an alternative heating source to your
cylinder either now, or later, using either solar, heat pump water heating, wetback or gas, without changing your
cylinder when you make that decision.
How this works:
On the water heating side, the cylinder water is heated by the electric element which
comes standard in the cylinder, or by, say, solar collectors or a heat pump unit installed at a later date. (The
additional connection ports for solar or a heat pump come standard with each SUN READY electric hot water
cylinder.) Wetback connection ports are also offered as an option.
On the water use side, the hot potable or drinking water that the household uses is not
the water in the main cylinder.
The hot potable or drinking water that the household uses is actually inside a copper
coil within the cylinder. This coil is either 30 metres or 45 metres long, depending on the SUN READY Cylinder
model chosen.
When a hot tap is turned on, the water inside the coil now starts to flow, delivering
hot water to the tap while more cold water enters the coil, winding its way up the coil within the cylinder and
heating up as it goes. The design maximum flow deliverable from the coil is 24 litres a minute of hot water for the
smaller coil, and 36 litres a minute for the larger coil. (This flow from the coil is then mixed with cold water to
give you the temperature you want at the shower head. A comfortable shower uses about 12 to 20 litres per minute of
warm, mixed water.)
Proven design:
This design has been available for decades and is still the standard for wetback
systems. It is usually referred to by tradesmen as "thermal store". Today the SUN READY caters for modern high
temperature solar collectors or a heat pump water heating unit that is located outdoors, using the thermal store
system and additional inlet/outlet ports so you can choose from a range of hot water heating methods, in addition
to electricity. For example, solar collectors or a hot water heat pump unit are readily able to be added now or
later, without changing your cylinder and without having to jury rig valves and other gadgets to accommodate these
alternative heating technologies.
Water pressure:
The water you use is at whatever pressure your household supply pressure is, whether low
or mains pressure. As explained above, cold water at whatever supply pressure you have is piped to the coil inside
the cylinder, and is heated by this high capacity heating coil as you draw it at the hot taps .
The cylinder is of "open vented" design, and the water in the cylinder is not under
pressure (and it is not the water you use).
The SUN READY Cylinder is suitable for use with tank water for rural areas or areas
without town supply.
Made in New Zealand:
The SUN READY is made right here in New Zealand exclusively for DEGREE by cylinder
veteran Sigma Sheetmetals Limited, from high quality materials including copper that meets all New Zealand plumbing
regulations, specifications and safety standards.
The SUN READY tank offers a 5 year manufacturer's guarantee, and the element and
thermostat is covered by a 2 year manufacturer's quarantee.
